Is This the Ground Invasion of Rafah?
Contributed by: Nour, Medical Student
Location: Rafah, Gaza
The night before last night was intense and crazy, we tried to rest but after less than one hour, we got up to these bombings everywhere across all Rafah, we had no idea what was happening. We were looking at the news, we had no idea what was actually happening. Did they actually come in? Is this the ground invasion of Rafah? Is it not? Too many questions, no answers. A lot of bombings, and death felt too close. It always feels very close, but at some points, it gets too, too, too close. And that night was one of those nights. We were ready to die that night. We still can’t believe we survived it. And we know it will only get worse with time.
The sleep deprivation has caused my immunity to be horrible. Infections are common and widespread in Rafah because it is densely populated currently with a lack of hygiene materials, sewage everywhere, and people are in close proximity. I caught a bad viral infection from the hospital, and keep catching those because I know my immunity is not great.

How many hours do I sleep? This depends, there isn’t really a certain number of hours. It ranges from… sometimes if I’m lucky, six hours but the six hours is just not too often. It’s really mostly none to maybe four hours and it’s mostly interrupted.
Most of the time, the night time is not the greatest for sleep, but sometimes, we just get too tired, so we try but we keep waking up. During the day, there isn’t much time for us to make up our sleep because there's always something happening. It’s either me going to volunteer at the hospital or working on our humanitarian aid project or going to stand in line for hours to buy bread, get water, or take care of or check on our family. There’s literally just always something happening, bombings always happening. We don’t find time during the day to sleep but again, night time is more intense. Our sleep during the nighttime is very interrupted.
