Sleep Testimonies from Conflict Zones
Sleep is central to the well-being of every system in our body. But what does it mean for sleep and dreamscapes to be stolen? While the night can be beautiful and evocative, it can also be dangerous and disruptive when seen and understood through the lens of systemic violence.
This project, Sleep Testimonies from Conflict Zones, was created to emphasize the significance and sacredness of the night, and share how the night can be a time of deep-rooted violence.
In November 2023, we began collecting sleep testimonies from Palestinians in an effort to document the short and long term impacts on their sleep health. What does sleep look like for Palestinians impacted by the occupation in its myriad of forms? These are their words.
Notes:
We tried to provide audio accompaniment for the written testimonies when we had consent from the contributor to share their voice note or have someone else read their written responses.
We tried to provide an interactive map for which the default option is Google Maps. The decision to include the range of locations comes at the cost that Google Maps does not recognize the existence of Israel’s apartheid wall.
